What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is a problem that needs care within hours or a day, not weeks. Common examples:

  • Severe or throbbing tooth pain that keeps you up at night
  • A knocked-out adult tooth
  • A cracked or broken tooth, especially with pain
  • Swelling in your gums, face or jaw
  • A lost crown or filling that leaves a sharp or painful tooth
  • Bleeding that does not slow down after 15 minutes of pressure

What to do for a toothache on the weekend

Until you can see a dentist, these steps can help you stay comfortable:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove trapped food.
  • Hold a cold compress on your cheek for 15 minutes at a time.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever exactly as the label directs, if it is safe for you.
  • Do not put aspirin directly on your gums. It can burn the tissue.
  • Sleep with your head raised on an extra pillow.

What to do if a tooth gets knocked out

Time matters most. For an adult tooth, try to see a dentist within 30 minutes to an hour.

  • Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root.
  • If it is dirty, rinse it briefly with milk or water. Do not scrub it.
  • If you can, gently put it back in the socket and bite on a clean cloth.
  • If not, keep it in a cup of milk and bring it with you.
  • Do not try to put a baby tooth back in. Call us so we can check your child.

Is Sigma Dental Clinic open on weekends?

We are open Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 7 PM and Saturday from 9 AM to 2 PM. We are closed on Sundays. If you have a dental emergency on a Sunday and it cannot wait, go to an emergency room for swelling, fever or heavy bleeding, then call us first thing Monday.

How a weekend emergency visit works

  • Call us. Tell us your symptoms so we can find the earliest time.
  • Quick exam and X-ray. Dr. Sepi Dashti finds the cause of the pain.
  • Relief first. We focus on stopping pain and infection that day.
  • Your plan. We explain any follow-up treatment and costs before we start.

We accept most PPO plans, Illinois Medicaid for adults and kids, and Cherry payment plans. Learn more on our emergency dentist in Chicago page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an emergency dentist open on Saturday in Chicago?

Yes. Sigma Dental Clinic at 1954 W Foster Ave in Lincoln Square is open Saturdays from 9 AM to 2 PM and sees emergency visits when we can. Call (773) 506-2033 early in the day.

Should I go to the ER for a toothache?

Go to the emergency room if you have swelling spreading to your eye or neck, a high fever, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a jaw injury. For tooth pain without those signs, a dentist is the better choice because the ER usually cannot fix the tooth.

Can I wait until Monday for a broken tooth?

If there is no severe pain, swelling or bleeding, a broken tooth can often wait a day or two. Keep the area clean, avoid chewing on that side and cover sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum. Call us as soon as we open.

Does Medicaid cover emergency dental care?

Illinois Medicaid plans cover emergency dental care for pain and infection. We accept Medicaid for adults and kids and will check your plan when you call.

What should I bring to an emergency dental visit?

Bring a photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, a list of your medications and, for a knocked-out tooth, the tooth in a cup of milk.
